WHO WE ARE

The Municipal Engineers Association (MEA) is an association of public sector Professional Engineers in the full time employment of municipalities performing the various functions that comprise the field of municipal engineering.

MISSION STATEMENT

To provide unity and focus for professional engineers employed by Ontario's municipalities through the sharing of knowledge and information and by addressing issues of common concern.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSOCIATION

(a)   to be a resource in all matters related to municipal engineering;
(b) i to be an advocate of sound municipal engineering;
  ii to disseminate information;
(c) i to develop and champion positions on municipal engineering issues;
  ii to recognize and promote outstanding achievements of municipal engineers;
  iii to create and maintain networks for the sharing of information.

OUR HISTORY

The Municipal Engineers Association came into being February 1974 as a result of the voluntary amalgamation of the former City Engineers Association (formed in 1947) and the County Engineers Association (formed in 1951).

Both Associations had close working relationships with Provincial Departments, especially with the Department of Highways. As a result, throughout the 1950s and 1960s, both organizations had considerable influences on Provincial Policies.

After amalgamation the Municipal Engineers Association continued to expand its relationship with Provincial Ministries and other Associations. Liaison Committees are ongoing with Ministries of Transportation, Environment, Natural Resources, Labour and Municipal Affairs & Housing.

Liaison Committees also continue with the Consulting Engineers of Ontario, Ontario Sewer and Watermain Association, Ontario Road Builders and the Canadian Public Works Association.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

MEA has been involved in the development of General Conditions of Contract for municipal projects, Road Needs Studies, Equipment Rental Rates, Municipal Tendering Procedures, Municipal Class Environmental Assessments for Roads, Water and Wastewater Projects, Municipal Works Design Manual, Guidelines on Lot Grading and Drainage Control.

MEA was one of the original partners in the development of the Ontario Provincial Standards. We are still active in maintaining these documents.

Along with OGRA and CPWA (Ontario Chapter), MEA was one of the three founders of the Tri-Committee for the Use of Computers in Public Works.

MEA has encouraged continuing education for its members and has been very active in providing opportunities for municipal employees to obtain technical, work-related training.

A highlight of our year is the Annual MEA Workshop traditionally held Wednesday - Friday in various locations throughout the Province in the latter part of November.

Our AGM is traditionally held on the Monday of the last full week of February (in conjunction with the OGRA Convention).

ORGANIZATION

The MEA is administered by an elected Executive Committee.

The slate of officers includes President, Past-President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and six Directors.

The Executive Committee meets mid month 9 times each year.

Our membership stands at approximately 650 engineers representing 135 municipalities.

Full membership is open to any municipally employed engineer in Canada. Associate membership is available to Provincially or Federally employed engineers performing municipal engineering for their employer.
