City of Hamilton - Senior Project Manager, Construction & Implementation (Development Engineering)
Jul 23, 2010

Hamilton. A city of progress.

At the City of Hamilton, our vision is “to be the best place in Canada to raise a child, promote innovation, engage citizens and provide diverse economic opportunities”. With our rich history, culturally strong and diverse communities, blend of urban and rural attractions, and ideal location in the heart of the Golden Horseshoe, Hamilton is a vibrant community of neighbours. We are also a leading employer, with many opportunities to grow and excel. We invite you to share in our vision as part of the Development Engineering Division in the Planning and Economic Development Department.

This 18-month temporary position is well suited to a customer-focused project manager with a Civil Engineering degree, registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario, and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience. Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Design and Construction, you will lead a team responsible for development and capital infrastructure projects that facilitate the City’s growth management plan. This role will see you using a best practices approach to develop and deliver quality services in a timely, cost-effective manner. To this end, you must have knowledge of applicable acts, regulations and by-laws, and a strong understanding of the planning and development process as well as the time sensitivity of growth-related projects. You are familiar with the requirements of the Ministry of the Environment Class 1 Operator’s Certificate in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection, and bring expertise in construction principles and construction materials related to municipal infrastructure (e.g., roads, sewers and watermains) design and construction. A demonstrated ability to effectively manage a large multidisciplinary staff in a results-oriented, predominantly unionized environment is essential, as are solid administration and budgeting skills, an understanding of the collective bargaining process, and a background in a computerized setting. You are also adept at dealing effectively with elected officials, government representatives, management, peers, staff and the general public. A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle are required.
